Sanford Warns About Funding State Budget

Governor Urges Lawmakers To Avoid Uncertain Money

POSTED: 10:35 am EST March 11, 2004

Gov. Mark Sanford is asking House leaders to avoid using questionable funding for core government functions.

Sanford sent a letter to House leaders also asking them to restore cuts made in the base budgets of state agencies.

The House Ways and Means Committee has proposed several ideas to restore some of the budget cuts agencies have suffered.

But Sanford said some of the ideas for making up the money may not work.

Ways and Means Committee budget writers are counting on $90 million in additional tax collections by giving the Revenue Department more resources to enforce tax laws.

They also expect to make nearly $57 million by selling surplus property and closing vehicle maintenance operations.

Sanford is questioning whether those proposals will bring in enough money.
