Subject: Week of March 1, 2010

Good Morning,

I just want to pass on some good news and some expected news.

Last Tuesday, the B&C Board voted 5 to 0 allow us to run a $29 million deficit. Actually, when the Board allows deficit spending, it is somewhat of a complement to the efficiency of an agency; when the Board is presented with a deficit request, it has the option of approving the deficit, directing specific cuts, or ultimately taking over the operation of the agency and making cuts.

Consistent with the Board staff recommendations and the findings of countless reviews, the Board reached the conclusion that further cuts cannot be made safely at SCDC. We all appreciate their decision.

This means that there should be no further furlough days, this fiscal year.

The expected news: Next fiscal year, beginning July 1, 2020, we will have to implement at least five days of furlough, again. How many and how has yet to be determined, as the state budget writing process is still in the early stages.

Keep up the good work and make every dollar count.
