SHELBY, N.C. - Sheriff's deputies uncovered
75 video poker machines from a Cleveland County warehouse Monday,
culminating a weekend investigation.
A county narcotics officer spotted individuals unloading the
machines into the warehouse. That was after police received
information that individuals were bringing video poker machines into
Cleveland County from South Carolina.
The seizure of the video poker machines, which were being stored
in the warehouse, was the most ever of inactive machines in the
county, Cleveland County Sheriff's Office Capt. Bobby Steen
said.
No arrests have been made, he said.
According to Steen, officers first learned of the video poker
machines Saturday. A narcotics officer followed the suspects after
they unloaded the machines. That took the officer to a Gaffney,
S.C., truck stop, where the suspects placed more video machines in a
truck. The machines were then brought to Cleveland County and
unloaded in the warehouse, Steen said.
Police think the suspects were attempting to operate the machines
in other locations, possibly inside North Carolina, Steen said.
Video poker machines are illegal in South Carolina. While the
machines are legal in North Carolina, it is illegal to warehouse any
video poker machine, unless it is the legal manufacturing of the
machine.
