COLUMBIA, S.C. - The House and Senate overrode
Gov. Mark Sanford's vetoes of two bills passed at the end of last
year's legislative session.
On Tuesday, the House took final action on a Senate bill that
allows people who had worked in state government as college interns,
work study students and graduate assistants buy time in the
retirement system.
Sanford had opposed changes to a retirement system that's already
can't pay future cost of living increases.
But House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bobby Harrell,
R-Charleston, said the bill is needed to protect the retirement
system. A loophole in the current law allows workers to cash in on
unused vacation time multiple times.
The House overrode the veto with a 94-3 vote and the legislation
now becomes law.
The Senate also overrode a veto on a House bill that allows
commercial landlords more access to tenant property. Landlords can
go to magistrate now and get an order allowing them into premises if
a tenant denies them access.
That Senate's 35-1 vote means that legislation becomes law. |
