NEW LEGISLATION

Two state House members are sponsoring legislation that would keep those convicted of criminal domestic violence from owning or possessing a gun.

Rep. Joel Lourie, D-Richland, and Rep. Gloria Haskins, R-Greenville, are sponsoring the bill, which also would cover those who have restraining orders placed against them.

The bill would make S.C. law match federal law.

The House Criminal Laws Subcommittee will hold a public hearing on the bill at 9 a.m. today in Room 516 of the Blatt Building at the State House Capitol Complex.

Sponsors include the S.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, S.C. Victim Assistance Network, Sistercare, S.C. Sheriffs’ Association and S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center.
