Veterans' supporters hope that by next Memorial Day, travelers will find another flag flying above the state's rest areas.

The POW/MIA flag would honor U.S. soldiers who have been declared missing in action or prisoners of war.

A bill pending in the state House would require the flag to fly on six national holidays a year, during U.S. military operations and when soldiers are missing or imprisoned. The flag would go up on orders of the governor.

The bill was introduced May 1 as the combat phase of the war in Iraq was winding down. Fifty-five lawmakers have signed on to sponsor the legislation.

"We thought it would be a good thing to do to show our patriotism in support of our veterans and our troops," said state Rep. J. Anne Parks, D-Greenwood.

Will Folks, a spokesman for the governor, declined comment Sunday, saying his office needed time to study the bill.

The bill won't pass this year because legislators are focused on the budget, Parks said. But she said the bill has broad support and a good chance next year.

The black and white flag shows a bowed, silhouetted head and says "You are not forgotten."

It would fly above rest areas and other locations required by the governor on Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day.

Jack C. Ward Jr., an Army veteran from Travelers Rest, said he supports the idea.

"People need to know there are still American MIAs," he said.

The proposed legislation comes as some veterans say the true meaning of Memorial Day is slipping away.

Remembering fallen soldiers is giving way to fun in the sun, they say.

Leroy Cruel of Easley said that while some cook on the grill, he will attend remembrances from Greenville to Union.

"Memorial Day should be a tribute to veterans," the Army veteran said.
