I set up a chat session with your customer service to find out what was going on. At first, the agent said the increase was because our defensive driving certificate had expired. As a senior who has been carrying both RV and auto insurance for over 50 years, that sounded like an awfully large increase for that reason. Upon pressing the agent further, she said the part of the increase due to that certificate expiring was $68 (in any case we will be renewing our defensive driving certificate). I then asked what was the reason for the other $388 increase. With our last renewal which also was raised, this represents an almost $700 increase in two years which is a considerable financial burden for us. The agent then said it was because of the "cost of doing business" in our state of South Carolina. I wasn't clear on what that meant so I pressed for a further explanation. It finally came out that the cost of doing business referred to the number of claims and at-risk drivers in my state. I must say we feel it is an unconscionable practice to penalize us for the actions of other people. To my knowledge the people who make claims or are at-risk drivers will pay higher premiums. Isn't that supposed to cover your increased cost of doing business? If it doesn't, may I respectfully suggest you raise their premiums even higher, or perhaps do not renew their policies. We don't see how you can penalize the safe drivers in a whole state for the actions of others. We have never made a claim, we have no moving violations and not even a parking ticket in all the years we have been with National General. I would appreciate it if you or someone in your office could contact us with the hope of making an adjustment to lower the premium on our renewal which is due on October 24, 2016.
