The greatness of the Democratic Party is embodied in its diversity, and the diversity within that diversity.
The flamboyance of Rev. Al Sharpton is contrasted with the understatement of Illinois state senator and U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama; the elegance of Teresa Heinz Kerry with the toughness of Hillary Rodham Clinton; the calm logic of our Congressman Jim Clyburn with the moving oratory of Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, whose parents were from in Clarendon County; the sharp Texas wit of former Governor Ann Richards with the sophistication of Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.
The faces and hopes of the Democratic Party are the faces and hopes of America. The fabric of this party is the fabric of all America. It strives to give hope to all regardless of station in life or situation of birth.
It is the party that says the spirit of America is great and prosperity is possible for all. It is a party not afraid to share the America dream with all who want to embrace it. What a week! This will be our final article from "Beantown," "The Cradle of Liberty," or the "Home of the 2004 Democratic National Convention."
No matter what you call Boston, it is one heck of a city. It is amazing that we accumulated so many memories to cherish in such a short time--the patriotic, emotional service at the Old North Church, the Yankees and Red Sox at historic Fenway, the ghosts of Sam, Woody, and Frazier at Cheers, and of course, witnessing one of our nation's great traditions, the political party convention.
Equally exciting to the city itself was our opportunity to see, hear, and sometimes meet folks who have been central to our national and state government for the last quarter century.
It's been a real pleasure writing about our activities and environment this week, and we sincerely hope you have enjoyed our insights as much as we liked experiencing them. As we close and begin our journey home, we come away with a deep feeling that this Nov. 2 election will be the most important of our lifetimes. Our nation is at a crossroads that requires its citizens to make some difficult, gut wrenching decisions.
But, we believe that it is time to regain U.S. respect and dignity throughout the world; to hunt and destroy our real enemies instead of sending our gallant men and women into unnecessary wars of choice; and to create a genuine opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all, not just those born into it. There is a real choice in 2004. Make your choice wisely. God bless the USA.
