James O.
Snelgrove LEXINGTON - Chief Warrant Officer James O. Snelgrove (Ret.), of
Lexington, died Tuesday July 14, 2015 at his residence. Born on September
3, 1928, he was a son of the late James O. Snelgrove and Jessie Rae Harmon
Snelgrove. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 17,
2015 at Red Bank United Methodist Church by the Reverend Nelson Taylor.
Interment with military honors will follow. The family will receive
friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015, at
Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Mr. Snelgrove was a
graduate of Lexington High School and entered military service on July 12,
1951. He served dual roles in his military career both as a military and
civil service employee as a member of the S.C. Army National Guard until
his retirement on September 3, 1988. He rose to the rank of Chief Warrant
Officer. During his long and dedicated career, The Chief completed
overseas assignments during the Korean Conflict along with other missions.
As a distinguished member of the armed forces, he received many medals of
service and recognition for his dedication and leadership. After retiring
from his first career love, he enjoyed woodworking and craftsmanship
building numerous items for his family and friends, gardening, and sports
especially rooting for the Gamecocks. He was a loyal and dedicated member
of Red Bank United Methodist Church and served many years as the President
of the Men's Club where he enjoyed teaching his love for Christ. Mr.
Snelgrove is survived by his loving wife, Vera Taylor Snelgrove, children,
daughters, Anita Glover and her husband, Larry Glover, Teresa Taylor and
her husband, Gerald Taylor, Lisa McEntire and her husband, Bart McEntire,
and son, Layne Snelgrove. He also was the proud grandfather to nine
grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. He is survived by three
brothers and five sisters. He was a friend to all and was always seeking
ways to help others. His actions in life included driving a dual wheeled
deuce and half truck, rescuing people off the interstate in a Columbia
snowstorm and to him giving blood to the American Red Cross. His warm
heart and open arms were felt by many. In honor of the Chief's love for
the military and his country, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior
Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675.
