I work full-time as a dietary manager for a chain of elder care facilities with three extensions within the state. I have spent the last four years diligently working toward completion of a B.S. in Nutrition with the intent of becoming a registered dietitian, and the further intent of employing my skills as a dietitian (once my degree and internship are completed) to the service of the elderly and those in needful situations in the state of South Carolina. I am concerned that the proposed closing of SCSU next year will have extreme adverse effects on the completion of my education, primarily because SCSU is one of the only schools in S.C. that offers a degree in nutrition that leads to registration as a dietitian. It is my understanding that there are only three publicly funded schools in the state that offer such a degree, and SCSU is the only school in the midlands that offers this degree. Dietitians are a needed resource in our fine state, and by closing SCSU the legislature will be reducing the opportunities for new dietetics students by a full 1/3 within the state. This closing will severely affect my personal advancement, but will also bottleneck the process of staffing for dietitians in S.C. which is already in dire need of such services and will continue to need more dietitians as our population ages and baby boomers continue to enter retirement. This cannot be allowed to occur or it will be to the detriment of the state as a whole. Please veto any legislation that may cross your desk that would result in the closing of SCSU. Do this for the students, for the continuity of the state's only HBC, for the historical value of the college, and mostly for the benefit of the citizens of South Carolina who can only benefit from the skills of the professionals who graduate from SCSU and move on to serve your constituents. Thank you for your time and consideration.
