‘MAY-BANK’ MONEY

The state Department of Revenue is requesting $9 million to hire new employees. In return, director Burnie Maybank pledges to collect $90 million in additional taxes. If the General Assembly approves the request, the department is likely to hire:

• 30-35 revenue officers

• 10-15 central office collectors

• 10-15 front office staffers

• 15-20 auditors

• 30 support personnel, including computer programmers and appeals employees

• Total: About 110 employees, all with insurance and retirement benefits
