In the wake of the terrorist attack in Orlando, Reuters is reporting that 50 percent of likely voters now support a temporary halt on Muslim entry into the United States. Fear of a twisted terrorist group is pushing many Americans to back a measure that broadly restricts members an entire religion, which has many subgroups and sects that vary themselves in their beliefs. I know you agree that this makes no sense in terms of logistics or logic. We only need to consider that America's own homegrown terrorist group, the Ku Klux Klan, in many of its incarnations, has often identified itself as a Protestant Christian organization. Should all followers of Christ be judged and restricted based on the KKK's actions, even members of those groups who were targets of the KKK? Our country was created largely by people who came here to escape religious persecution, and one of our central liberties is freedom of worship. I hope that you will use your voice to calm those who support restrictions based on religion. We cannot let fear distort our judgement or stoke fires of blind hate. At the same time, I do believe the Orlando shooting reinforces the urgent need for more common-sense gun control measures, including a ban on assault weapons, and that proactive mental health measures should also be funded and supported to help prevent the horrific mass shootings that are plaguing this country. Given Charleston's tragedy, all of South Carolina's leaders should be at the forefront in finding solutions and common ground. Thank you for your work in this regard. Sincerely, Susan Hill Smith
