Awendaw, SC - GOVERNOR MARK SANFORD SIGNED INTO LAW TODAY A BILL THAT WILL GIVE MORE PROTECTION TO SOUTH CAROLINA WILDLIFE.

BALD EAGLES AND OTHER BIRDS OF PREY ALREADY RECEIVE SPECIAL PROTECTION FROM A PRIVATE CENTER IN AWENDAW.

THE LAW WILL NOW ALLOW THE CENTER TO RECEIVE STATE AND FEDERAL FUNDS TO EXPAND ITS SERVICES. THE CENTER WILL BE EXPANDING, GOING INTERNATIONAL, AND BECOMING THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE NATION. THE CENTER HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HELPING THE BALD EAGLE SURVIVE IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES HELPS PROTECT THE GROWING POPULATION THAT HAS JUMPED FROM 13 PAIRS IN THE 1970'S, TO 237 PAIRS IN 2004.
