DNR officer nominated for public service award

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement 1st Sgt. Dennetta Dawson of Charleston has been nominated as a candidate for the 2006 Jefferson Awards for Public Service.

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service, sponsored by the Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston,1st Sgt. Dennetta Dawson honor nominees and recipients for their extraordinary achievements in communities in which they live and work. The Jefferson Awards were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard. The mission was to establish a nationally recognized award for outstanding community and public service. Awards are presented on two levels, regional and national.

An independent panel of Charleston area citizen judges selected six honorees out of the nomination pool to be announced March 15. From this group, one person will be selected by the national selection committee to travel to Washington, D.C., to represent all the Post and Courier Jefferson Awards honorees.

Dawson was also awarded the title of statewide S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) 2006 officer of the year for her role in hunter and boater education. She joined DNR in 1997 as a field officer, and her current position is an instructor in the Law Enforcement Division’s Hunter and Boater Education Section. In 2006, she reached more than 9,000 people through her education program, safety and ethics presentations, and hunter and boater recertification courses.
