The four Republican candidates for the vacant House District 24 seat voiced mild disagreement on a handful of issues Monday in their first candidates' forum.

But the format at the Greenville County GOP's First Monday luncheon didn't allow much opportunity for policy comparisons between lawyers Bruce Bannister, Tom Ervin, William Herlong and Warren Mowry. With four exceptions, moderator Deb Sofield posed separate questions to each candidate.

There is one Democrat running in the Republican-leaning district, Michelle Shain, a Greenville City Council member.

The seat is vacant because its previous 25-year incumbent, Republican David Wilkins, resigned June 2 to become U.S. ambassador to Canada.

The eventual winner will have to run for a full two-year term in November 2006.
