Gov. Mark Sanford has invited Daniel Island residents to join him
Monday for a meeting with State Ports Authority officials and other
groups about the development of land currently owned by the
authority.
Meeting participants will look at conceptual plans for Daniel
Island, said Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer. There are no actual
proposals for the land yet, he said.
The ports authority owns essentially the entire southern tip of
the island. The authority acquired the property as part of efforts
to develop new port facilities.
But the Global Gateway port expansion was thwarted by the
Legislature under pressure from the Charleston community.
The Legislature then mandated that any future port development in
Charleston Harbor be on the west bank of the Cooper River. The
authority shifted its effort to a much smaller expansion at the
former Charleston Navy base and as a result was left with Daniel
Island property.
Ports Authority chairman Bill Stern said he intends to begin the
process of selling the land this month.
“Daniel Island will be disposed of as the governor has asked us
to do,” Stern
said. |
