Anderson County leaders held their
breaths for more than a year to announce a massive Walgreens
distribution center. It will bring 450 jobs to the
Upstate.
Governor Mark Sanford helped seal the
deal in an official announcement in the Anderson County Council
chambers Wednesday morning.
"We had a few things going for us
including geography and a good port system," said Governor
Sanford.
But it wasn't an easy win. Walgreens
officials searched high and low for the ideal location in the
Southeast. Anderson went head to head with Commerce, GA. It puts
more pressure on state and local leaders to make their areas more
competitive.
"We need to do that on a day to day
basis," said Governor Sanford.
The incentive package included a
requirement to invest a minimum of $140 million in five years at the
site and a reduction in Walgreens' property tax rate from 10.5
percent to 6 percent for up to 20 years.
