CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two Republican candidates for
a Charleston state Senate seat sparred during a heated radio debate
Friday.
Chip Campsen, a former state House member and aide to Gov. Mark
Sanford, is facing incumbent Sen. John Kuhn for the nomination.
Kuhn accused Campsen of being ineffective as the governor's
senior policy advisor, saying it was Campsen's job to get the
governor's agenda passed by lawmakers in 2003.
"You did not get one bill through," Kuhn said.
Campsen said that was not true, and listed bills he'd promoted as
policy advisor that were passed that year.
Campsen said the only bill Kuhn passed as a primary sponsor this
year was the Teacher Protection Act that Campsen said his own sister
helped Kuhn write.
Near the end of the debate, Kuhn charged that Campsen used his
political influence to get a federal bailout on his business, Fort
Sumter Tours Inc.
Campsen said the Congressional delegation agreed that the federal
government had overcharged his business some 38 percent in taxes and
fees. He said the delegation simply corrected the situation.
Kuhn and Campsen will face each other in a runoff election on
Tuesday. |
