2000 FARM CASH RECEIPTS TOTAL $1.7 BILLION

(COLUMBIA)---In a preliminary report, the SC-USDA Agricultural Statistics Service last week stated that cash receipts for farm marketings in South Carolina during 2000, including government payments, totaled $1,706,875,000. The $1.7 billion is 10 percent ($152 million) above 1999 and 8 percent ($134 million) above 1998.

The number one commodity in terms of cash receipts during 2000 was broilers, accounting for 21 percent of the total, excluding government payments.

CROPS cash receipts, at $770 million, accounted for 49 percent of the total commodity cash receipts during 2000 compared with 46 percent in 1999 and 49 percent in 1998. Preliminary 2000 crops cash receipts increased $118 million (18 percent) from 1999 and were $25 million (3 percent) above 1998. Greenhouse & nursery, tobacco and cotton were the top three crop commodities in 2000 in terms of cash receipts.

LIVESTOCK AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS, with cash receipts of $792 million in 2000, accounted for 51 percent of the commodity total compared to 54 percent in 1999 and 51 percent in 1998. Livestock receipts increased 2 percent from 1999 and were 3 percent above 1998. Broilers, turkeys, cattle and calves were the top three commodities.

The top 10 commodities for 2000 in descending order are: Broilers, Greenhouse, Nursery & Floriculture, Tobacco, Turkeys, Cattle and Calves, Cotton Lint / Seed, Eggs, Vegetables, Milk Production, and Soybeans.
