(Columbia-AP) March 31, 2004 - The field is set for
Republicans and Democrats seeking the US Senate seat
being given up by Democrat Ernest Hollings this year, as
well as the state's six US House seats. Hollings is
retiring. He was first elected to the position in 1966.
State Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum and
former police officer Ben Frasier are seeking the
Democratic nomination for Hollings seat. There are six
Republican candidates: former Governor David Beasley,
former Attorney General Charlie Condon, Fourth District
Representative Jim DeMint, Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark
McBride, Charleston businessman Thomas Ravenel and
Bluffton businesswoman Orly Benny Davis.
First District Congressman Henry Brown is being
challenged by fellow-Republican Bob Batchelder in the
June primary. Second District Representative Joe Wilson
faces Democrat Michael Ray Ellisor in November.
Third District Congressman Gresham Barrett is
unopposed. In the Fourth District seat DeMint is giving
up, the Republican candidates are former Congressman Bob
Inglis, Jack Adams and former South Carolina House
members Phil Bradley and Carole Wells.
Fifth District Representative John Spratt will face
Republican Albert Spencer in November. Republicans Gary
McLeod and Michael Reino are seeking the nomination to
face incumbent Democrat Jim Clyburn in November.
Filing for South Carolina Statehouse and
Congressional seats closed at noon Tuesday. Democrats
and Republicans expect the GOP to retain control of the
Legislature. Republicans hold 29 of 46 Senate seats and
73 of 124 House seats. The Democratic and Republican
primaries are Tuesday, June 8. The general election is
Tuesday, November 2.
Several State Senate seats will be hotly contested in
both the primaries and the general election this year.
In District 19 Hemphill Pride will challenge Kay
Patterson, who has held the seat since 1985, for
the Democratic nomination.
Republican John Courson, the incumbent, will face
Democrat Kit Smith in District 20. And, Barney Giese
will run against Ken Wingate in the Republican Primary
for the right to run for his father's seat against
Democrat Joel Lourie in District 22.
The race for SC
House District 78 features two Richland County Council
members in the Republican Primary. Council members Joan
Brady and Susan Brill are running for theGOP nomination
along with L.W. Flynn and Don Purcell. The winner will
face either Tina Adams or Todd Specter, the two
Democrats vying for their party's nomination.
