So many families in our county are living in hotels because they have past evictions. I didn't realize how huge this issue is until I gave a co-worker a ride home. She lives in a hotel in which a majority of the residents work 40 plus hours a week but cannot obtain a home because of mishaps that occurred years ago. I myself would be one of these residents if it wasn't for my caring mother allowing my children and I to reside with her. I am a nurse that must take flexible positions because my kids have sickle cell anemia. I don't receive any SSI for them so sometime we experience hard times when I have to miss work. While I was attending nursing school in 2006, I had an eviction filed against me when I got behind on my rent. Although, I paid the balance before my court date and was allowed to remain at the residence, the eviction still remains on my record. In 2011, my hours changed so I got behind on my rent. Since I worked as an independent contractor for a home care company, I couldn't file for unemployment. I was forced to move in with a family member for a few months until I relocated to New York. I returned from New York in 2013, but I haven't been able to obtain my own residence because of the evictions. When I contacted the courthouse, I was told that the evictions will remain on my record forever and maybe I should consider moving out of state. I was born in South Carolina and enjoy being a resident. Why should I have to move? How is it that negative accounts remain on your credit report for 7 years but evictions for life. I feel that no individual is perfect so why should they have to pay for the rest of their life for an eviction. CHANGES are needed. Sincerely, Kenyatta Hardy 66.87.132.169
