In anticipation of the July 1^st inception date of the new South Carolina Board of Paralegal Certification, the SC Upstate Paralegal Association (SCUPA) would like to request a Proclamation for Paralegal Day to be issued for June 10, 2016.  We will use this Proclamation in our promotion of the new certifying Board to our membership, and also share the Proclamation with the two other major paralegal associations in the middle- and low-country to do the same! 

 

We have reviewed the language from prior Proclamations and have no updates to the language at this time.

I really don’t know how (or if) the date of October 14 was established for Paralegal Day. In searching the limited records I can access, it appears that procs have been issued for varying dates in October. This office does not pick dates – we depend on the requestor to provide them. Generally, dates coincide with a national observance, but that does not appear to be the case with Paralegal Day. Recent requests have originated from a Paralegal Certificate program at a college in the state. Ideally, people involved in the profession (organizations/educators/boards/etc) would establish a date.

Last September, you assisted me with renewing the Governor’s Proclamation for Paralegal Day on October 14^th. As you may have heard, the South Carolina Supreme Court recently passed Rule 429 to the SCACR creating the South Carolina Board of Paralegal Certification. This is a voluntary State certification that allows certified paralegals from NALA or NFPA to apply to become State board certified – or a South Carolina Certified Paralegal (SCCP). This is a huge advancement for certified paralegals in this State, following the lead of other States like North Carolina, Florida and Texas.

 

The founding Board expects the SCCP application and approval process to be effective for the Board’s fiscal year of July – June.

 

The purpose of my email is to find out how October 14^th was originally established as Paralegal Day; and also to see if it is possible for that date to be amended to coincide with the effective date of the new SCCP board certification – on or around July 1^st.

 

On behalf of the Executive Board of the SC Upstate Paralegal Association, we feel this would be a great way to raise awareness to the new SC Board certification and promote the paraprofession, as well.
