The Senate Medical Affairs Committee has approved a bill that would allow women who have stillborn babies to receive a state certificate.
The bill says a certificate may be issued for stillbirths that come after at least 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The certificate would not be required, but those requesting it could get one from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Spartanburg Senator Jim Ritchie says this provides a way to help families heal.
Ritchie says before this, there was norecognition of that child even though the mother carried and delivered the child, which was born dead.
The bill passed the committee unopposed.
A similar House version of the bill \will head to the Senate floor.
