Sanford picked to chair NGA economic panel

Staff Report

Gov. Mark Sanford has been named the next chairman of the National Governors Association's Committee on Economic Development and Commerce at the NGA's 96th annual meeting in Seattle.

Sanford will chair the committee for the coming year. It reviews a broad range of issues covering transportation infrastructure, telecommunications, international trade promotion, financial services regulation, science and technology development and affordable housing.

"Mark is an incredibly innovative leader who's perfectly suited for this role," said Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, incoming vice chairman of the NGA.

Sanford said he will continue to push for income tax relief in South Carolina, calling it "essential in unlocking the potential of small businesses to expand and create jobs."

His income tax reform proposal passed the S.C. House of Representatives this year but stalled in the state Senate.
