Archery in the Schools state tournament at Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic in Columbia
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conducting one of the largest student sporting events in the state for the 8th annual Archery in the Schools Tournament. The tournament is the culminating event for the Archery in the Schools program. Over 1000 elementary, middle and high school students from around the state will compete to place at the top of the leaderboard in each age category. Those doing so will be eligible for the national tournament.
One of the schools at the competition is Hickory Tavern Middle School from Laurens County. Hickory Tavern has been onboard with the program since its inception. "Every student at the school has participated in the archery program at some point," says school athletic director and archery coach Ed Prescott. "We're also fortunate to have, essentially, a feeder program at Waterloo Elementary. Kids can get started in the program and then move over to the middle school as they advance academically."
Coach Prescott pointed out two team members of note, "Seventh grader Jonathan Patterson is unusual for his poise and control. He placed third overall last year and this year he was named team captain for the state tournament." Not to be outdone is 8th grader Danielle Crocker, "It's a joy to watch her draw a bow. Such skill at a young age. This is her third consecutive state tournament." Hickory Tavern placed third overall in team standings last year in their division.
The Archery in the Schools Program is a joint venture between state departments of education and wildlife. Several archery equipment manufactures and organizations are also partners. The program promotes student education, physical education and participation in the life-long sport of archery. The program’s focus is to provide International Style target archery training in physical education classes grades 4-12. For more about the program check http://www.dnr.sc.gov/hunting/archery/.
The 29th Annual Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic will be held at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia March 22-24. Doors will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22; from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 24. Classic-goers will find hundreds of exhibitors on site with the latest fishing, hunting and outdoor equipment for show and sale. Admission to the 2013 Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic is $8 and parking is free. Seniors 62 and over get in for $7 while children 10 and under are admitted free.
