(Summerville-AP) Oct. 6, 2004 - State
Representative's George Bailey's resume may have another
discrepancy.
The St. George representative switched to the
Republican Party as re-election filing closed in March,
and Democrats have raised questions since then about
items on his resume. That includes a line in his state
Legislative manual that says he is a Marine veteran and
past claims of college education.
Bailey's resume also says he graduated from the
Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia. The school's
officials say they have no record of his attending. He
says he's not going to respond to negative attacks
anymore.
State Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin says
Republican House Speaker David Wilkins should cancel a
fund-raiser Thursday for Bailey. Wilkins says
Bailey has his full support and he still plans to
attend. He says Erwin should concentrate on Democratic
candidates.
In September Democrats said Bailey's biography in the
state Legislative Manual improperly lists his military
experience as a Marine veteran. Representative George
Bailey of St. George says he served two years in the
53rd Special Infantry Reserve at the Charleston Naval
Shipyard 50 years ago while he was in high school.
But, Dwight Stuckey of Hanahan said he served in the
same Marine company as Bailey. He says Bailey was
quickly able to name officers he served under when he
asked him.
Democrats say the high school program doesn't match
the Marine Corps Reserve claim that Bailey continues to
list in his campaign literature. They cite federal law
that requires a Marine reservist to be 18 or older and
have previous armed forces service.
But, Bailey said his involvement with the Special
Infantry Reserve obligated him to the service if his
unit was activated.
