Hey Katherine – The SC Department of Commerce is partnering with DHEC, SC Dept of Ag, Harvest Hope (and others) to put on a press event for the Don’t Waste Food SC launch www.scdhec.gov/dontwastefoodsc

to be planned for July 13th.  They would like to do a proclamation announcing the day as Don’t Waste Food SC Day.

The US goal is to reduce 50% of food waste by 2030 – to feed hungry people, compost, and create energy rather than landfilling food.  SC is looking at adopting that goal with the launch of this campaign, and Anna and I have been coordinating the stakeholder group that is working to connect businesses, industry, non-profits like Harvest Hope and composters together. In fact, as a result of our meeting, Harvest Hope just started sending product to the composter located in Elgin.

·       Food waste is the top item thrown away by Americans accounting for 21 percent (35.2 million tons) of the nation's waste in 2013 according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

·       It is estimated that as much as 40 percent of all the food grown and processed nationwide is never eaten – a loss valued at more than $160 billion annually according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

·       In September 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the nation's first food waste reduction goal to cut food waste by 50 percent by the year 2030.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,

Debbie

Subject: Proclamation

Hey Katherine – Commerce’s recycling division is partnering with DHEC, Department of Agriculture and Harvest Hope for a press event on July 13th, and they were wondering if they could get a proclamation from the Governor to make it Don’t Waste Food SC Day? If it is approved, I’ll be happy to send over the content for the proclamation.

Thanks,
