Together my husband and I have eight direct ancestors who served in the civil war. Six of them served under the Confederate flag (including one who gave his life). We strongly disagree with the Sons of Confederate Veterans that the flag is a legacy of honor to the "70 million of us whose ancestors fought for the South." (Ben Jones writing in the New York Times June 19, 2015). To us, in the context of modern times, it is a symbol of racism & treason. It is a symbol belonging to those who stubbornly choose to remain on the wrong side of history. It dishonors our Confederate ancestors, who courageously fought for what they thought was right at the time. The time is long overdue for the flag to be relegated to museums, reenactments, and history books. We were absolutely disgusted to see this flag flying at full mast, on State hours grounds, while the American flag was flying at half-mast. We choose to honor our Confederate ancestors by working to make our Country the best that it can be for ALL Americans. We hope South Carolina will do the right thing. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Melanie & Glen Barnett PS. Several of Glen's ancestral lines go back to colonial South Carolina. They were Revolutionary War patriots.
