Probation, Parole chief resigns after resume questions

(Columbia-AP) Sept. 5, 2003 -- The director of the state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services has resigned after questions arose about inaccuracies on his resume. Governor Mark Sanford's spokesman says the governor accepted Jim McClain's letter of resignation that is effective immediately.

Spokesman Will Folks says Parole Department chief of staff Stephen G. Birnie will manage the agency until Sanford appoints a replacement. Birnie served as interim director until McClain took over.

Folks says Sanford did not indicate when he would name a replacement.

McClain submitted his letter of resignation after an inquiry into items listed on his resume. He would not comment Friday on any specific issues on his background when reached by phone at his Orangeburg County home. He said, "The only thing I can say is I'm really pleased to have had the privilege to serve."
