<WFUD_Request>Dear Gov. Haley,

I appealed to your office earlier this year about a problem I had with Medicaid when trying to get my mom set up in the nursing home. When they finally took care of it, it was 2 months later so they didn't want to cover the month or June and July again after dragging their feet. I sent in an appeal in on October 12,2016 and still nothing back from them. My mom died October 22, 2016 and we are getting the bill from the nursing home wanting their money. Just for those two month the bill is over 10,000. My dad don't have the almost 14,000 for the total bill and I need Medicaid to give me some kind of answer so we can close this chapter. My dad is 90 years old and not doing to well himself so I am asking your office to please intervene. Thank you for whatever you can do. Below I am attaching a copy of what I sent to the appeals department. Sincerely Elizabeth Hogue

P.S.
On May 12, 2016 I once again started the process of trying to get Medicaid for my mom. She had been eligible when living in an assisted living situation but is now in a nursing home. I filled out all the paperwork and spoke with a case worker the very next day after gathering all the info I was told to gather. I took it in personally. From that point I went once and sometimes twice a week to see if there was anything else I needed to do or if a decision had been made. I was told that I had to prove that the home she and my dad sold was done at fair market value so I immediately went out to the tax office and BEGGED, not asked for them to give me a letter stating the value. They weren't going to help me at all until I pushed. Someone went out that very day and took care of it for me. I personally took it to the office and then again spoke with a case worker. Finally on July 27, 2016 I got a letter denying coverage because they said with the contract on the home, my dad's life ins. Policy, and my dad's bank account there were to many assets. I went to the office and spoke with a case worker to see what had to be done to make this right. We were only over by around 6000.00 I was told by Tiffany that if I would turn over the life ins. Policy which had a cash value of 7532.00, go ahead and pay the bill for May at the nursing home to show we had a bill for then, and we went ahead and prearranged Thelma's burial plans and paid out for them. I brought back all the receipts and proof and personally saw another case worker. I was told I had to just wait now. Finally I went BACK to the office and was told that the hold up was the house. It is under contract for deed and it appears whichever case worker who happened to be working on it at that time never heard of a contract for deed and didn't know what to do with it. I think it was almost another month before once again I got a letter telling me that AGAIN they needed banking statements. (third time) So I went the next day and took care of that, took them to the office and spoke to a case worker who PROMISED me 3 TIMES before I walked out that day that she would call me THAT DAY either way. She did not! So after a week I went BACK to see what was happening and found out nothing. Friday a week ago I got a call from someone totally different in a totally different office who informed me that I needed to prove what payments had been made on the home. She was giving me a heads up that I would be receiving papers in the mail one more time. She also informed me that if it was approved it would only go back to August. This leads to my appeal. Here it is September 19, 2016 If I had been told from the beginning about the life ins. Policy, and what I needed to do, this would have been done much earlier. I could elaborate so much more on this but honestly I don't have all the dates, and it wouldn't help with the bottom line. I have worked so hard to get this done in a timely manor because I don't like to leave things laying around. I am trying so hard to take care of my dad who is in assisted living, my mom in a nursing home, my business, and my own home, but every time they have jerked me around I have done what they asked and more. I did it quickly and got the info back very quickly. There really is no reason they couldn't have resolved this faster and given me the info I needed faster. I am asking that you reconsider the decision not to cover June and July. The cost right now for those two months is much more than we can pay. Thank you for your consideration.
