(Columbia-AP) August 12, 2003 -- Comptroller General
Richard Eckstrom says South Carolina finished its 2003
fiscal year with a deficit of less than $70 million.
That shortfall will be a fraction of the nearly $249
million deficit the state reported last year as it
closed the fiscal books for 2002.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman
there's good news in the red ink. He says a smaller
deficit means the state is finally getting more revenue.
Eckstrom, Leatherman and the other three members of
state Budget and Control Board will meet next week to
approve a plan to deal with the deficit.
