DNR recognizes TOMO Volunteer of the Year
Wes Chappell with the ACE Basin Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) was recently recognized as the recipient of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) William W. Matthews, Jr. Take One Make One Volunteer of the Year Award. DNR recognized all the volunteers that have put in many hours for youth education around the state during a banquet in Columbia on April 21.
DNR also thanked Golden State Foods (GSF) Foundation for their continued support of the Take One Make One Program (TOMO). This year they graciously donated $5000 with a total of $20,000 over the last four years.
Wes, a QDMA volunteer for five years in a variety of positions has helped develop and continue the tremendous partnership between QDMA and the TOMO program.
In 2011, Wes was responsible for planning and implementing six youth hunts. One of those hunts was a two-day deer hunt at the S.C. State Forestry Commission’s Neiderhoff Seed Orchard that included an overnight stay with meals at no cost to the Take One Make One program. Wes also assisted with both the Wounded Warrior and the Cancer Survivor youth hunt at Hope Plantation. Additionally, he was involved with two Outdoor Dream hunts as well as organizing guides and meals for a youth duck hunt at Lavington Plantation in Colleton County.
The TOMO program, operated through DNR Law Enforcement Division, specifically targets youth and young adults who have not experienced a previous shooting or hunting activity, but welcomes any participants. Participants are paired with volunteer hunting club members and private landowners who sponsor and actively participate in a year-round hunting, fishing, and shooting sports mentorship program.
