Sanford charter
school bill delayed in committee

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford's plan to
foster charter school growth ran into a snag in the House Education
and Public Works Committee Wednesday as a Republican legislator
questioned a key element of the bill.
Under the bill, charter schools would be overseen by a single
state school board that would be under the governor's oversight.
"I don't understand why we are putting this under the governor
and not under the superintendent of education," said Rep. Ted Pitts,
R-Lexington. "It doesn't seem to make sense that that's where this
should be housed."
The state Education Department already has resources to handle
that work and it shouldn't be duplicated elsewhere, Pitts said.
Pitts asked the committee to delay action on the bill for a week
until questions he and others have are answered.
For instance, Rep. Becky Martin, R-Anderson, said the more
details are needed on how much the changes would cost.
Despite the questions, Pitts said he supports efforts to create
more charter
schools. |
