Upstate stores are busy today with shoppers who've waited for the
most opportune moment to buy back-to-school supplies and other
merchandise that's tax-exempt this weekend.
But News Channel 7 wanted to put stores to the test.
Would we be charged taxes on items that were supposed to be
tax-free?
We went into a BI-LO, Publix, Wal-Mart, Target, and Big Lots in
Greenville to find out.
Almost everywhere we went the scanners had been changed and we
weren't charged any tax.
But at the Publix at Thornblade it was a different story.
We bought pantyhose and adult?diapers---both of which are on the
tax-exempt list for some reason---and had a tax on our bill.
After we brought it to the manager's attention, employees
e-mailed company headquarters which downloaded the correct scanner
information.
He says it should be correct now.
But it just goes to show you that even during the tax holiday you
have to keep an eye on your receipt.
