Subject: Email to Governor Haley

Ms. Galloway:  Your email to the Governor’s Office was forwarded to me for response as it dealt with Visitation at the South Carolina Department of Corrections.  As you stated in the email, your daughter Marissa Turner was sentenced to SCDC 10/14/16.  You asked if there was any way to set up a visit with her niece, whom she helped raise when her mother wasn’t in the picture.

Please note that if her niece, Macee, is a minor (under 18 years of age) she will not be able to visit.  Based on the criteria which must be met, Marissa won’t be eligible before her incarceration is over.  With 22,000 inmates to be responsible for, we do not make exceptions as we cannot do for one what we cannot do for all, I’m sure that you understand.  If she is eighteen or older, she merely needs to submit a visitation application.  Since Marissa did not list any siblings on her relative list, I have no way of knowing the approximate age of the niece.  If you have any further questions regarding visitation, you may leave a message on the Visitation Hotline (803-896-1838).  Staff will return your call and try to assist you accordingly.

Lastly, there are other opportunities available to communicate with Marissa as well (mail/phone/messaging).  Hopefully, Macee is old enough to utilize one or more of these options.

                                Sincerely, Alice V. Mascio
