Sanford praises Bush's tax plan

The Associated Press
Republican Gov. Mark Sanford praised President Bush's proposal to stimulate the national economy, saying it is "consistent" with what should happen in South Carolina.

"The best way to improve the economy is to invest in the economy, not in more government," Sanford said in response to Bush's State of the Union Address Tuesday night.

Bush proposed immediate tax cuts already approved by Congress to spur the economic growth by giving people more money and improving the bottom line for small businesses.

Sanford, like many legislators, has made a no-tax pledge.

"If we lower taxes at the federal level but turn around and raise them at the state level the net effect is going to be negligible," Sanford said.

But he said in his State of the State speech last week he would support a cigarette tax if there were a corresponding tax reduction elsewhere.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also praised Bush's economic proposals and his vision for reforming Social Security. Graham's support of a plan to invest portions of Social Security in the stock played a visible role in last year's Senate race.

"We cannot sit on the sidelines and watch Social Security go bankrupt," Graham said. "Unfortunately, some people prefer to stick their head in the sand and pretend the problem doesn't exist. That approach doesn't make the problem go away."

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-S.C., attended his first State of the Union speech and said he liked Bush's economic plan. "It's time to allow people to keep more of what the earn."
