South Carolina's Department of Public Safety has been awarded $2 million to stop violence against women.

The award comes from the U.S. Department of Justice's Violence Against Women Program, according to Sen. Fritz Hollings. All 50 states were awarded grants, he said.

South Carolina's grant is to be distributed to prosecutors (25 percent), law enforcement (25 percent), non-profit and non-government agencies with victim services (30 percent), the courts (5 percent) and the rest to the state's Department of Public Safety to use as it sees fit, the senator said in a statement.

"The STOP program effectively brings together the judicial system and advocacy programs to help female victims of violence through the difficult and often hallowing process of prosecuting their offenders," Hollings said.
