Henkes Jr. HERITAGE ACT - PRESERVATION OF MONUMENTS, MEMORIALS, SYMBOLS 2118 Huron Dr. Aiken SC 29803 barbara29803@bellsouth.net (803) 648-9297 (803) 208-3156 ETHI HERITAGE ACT - PRESERVATION OF MONUMENTS, MEMORIALS, SYMBOLS For the Preservation of Our State's Heritage Symbols, Monuments, Memorials and Names We all agree that the recent event in Charleston was a horrible, unnecessary tragedy which has left all of us remorseful and grieving. Suffice to say, this terrible act should not in any way shed any spiteful or negative reflection on the existence of the Historical Memorial depicted on our State Capitol grounds. I certainly do not condone the lack of respect shown by these Radical Leftists for the deceased. It is obvious that the mission for these outside groups of individuals is to target and attack individual cultures; thus creating chaos and racial division among the citizens of our great State of South Carolina. Their mission is to dishonor and bring shame upon our ancestors. Their intention is to eradicate all symbols, monuments, memorials and building names of our Confederate ancestors, through the guilt of political correctness. Some of these same ideologies are taking on the negative view of our Revolutionary War Heroes, Country's Founding Fathers and even the American Flag. I find their actions to be totally disrespectful, full of deceit and an attempt at divisiveness of the citizens of our great State of South Carolina. Today's target is the Historical Representation on statehouse grounds which is a tribute to all races military and civilians of South Carolinians who so gallantly and sacrificially served our state during a time of "Call to Arms". One need only to know the true facts surrounding the real cause of this military aggression. This needless act brought about the death or wounding of two-thirds (2/3) of our state's military personnel. According to state documents there was so much devastation from this conflict that the State Treasury almost had to declare bankruptcy as a result of providing limbs for its veterans. As a descendant of family members (Toole's & Perrin's) who faithfully served our state since the 1700's in the Senate, House of Representatives, and as U.S. Officers in the Revolutionary War and War with Mexico; I feel compelled to express my disappointment and disagreement with the aforementioned removal of all monuments, memorials, etc. Several of these individual family members served this state well; as both U.S. Officers in the War with Mexico and as Confederate Officers in the War of Northern Aggression. For four (4) generations my family has maintained a highly respectable Aiken Law Firm (Toole and Toole Attorneys), while at the same time giving of their time and talents as a statesman to our community and State. During the early 1900's my Great-Grandfather provided loans for "Blacks" to purchase their own home. He stated that each man should have the privilege of owning their own home. He did this as a result of banks not lending to the "Blacks" at this time. His rate of interest was compatible with local banks. His act of thoughtfulness was inspired by "Blacks" to give this section of Aiken the name of "Toole Hill". Our family has lived humbly for generations in this section of Aiken County with respect for others and living by the following saying, "JUDGE NOT A MAN BY THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN, BUT INSTEAD BY THE CHARACTER OF HIS HEART". GENTLEMAN, DO WE DISHONOR AND DISCREDIT THE WISHES OF SENATOR CLEMENTA PINCKNEY, WHEN HE DILIGENTLY AND PROFESSIONALLY AGREED TO A COMPROMISE ON THIS SAME TOPIC IN 2000? DO WE TURN OUR BACKS ON THE FAMILIES OF THOSE CITIZENS WHO HAVE SACRIFICED FOR THE FREEDOMS AND HONORS OF OUR STATE AND NATION? AS A STATE, DO WE SUCCUMB TO THE SAME POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AND WEAKNESSES OF OUR LEADERSHIP IN WASHINGTON; WITH POLITICIANS MAKING THEIR OWN DECISIONS - FEELING THEY KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THE PEOPLE? OR DO WE HAVE STATESMAN - WILLING TO SET ASIDE POLITICAL RAMIFICATIONS AND SUPPORT THE WILL OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS? With kindest regards for your service, Clair H. Henkes, Jr.
