I was hesitant to apply but I did, and correctly filled out the application and was approved. I was a student at York Technical College eventually, and noted that on all applications. I continued stating I was as a student and the benefits never stopped. I did not know the requirements for SNAPS, because I had never applied, and I just did to apply so I had no reason to question the approval. The next year which would be 2014 I was sent a form stating that I was mistakenly approved for SNAP benefits, I was ineligible due to me being a student and I would have to repay more than $1500.00 back. I appealed and the case worker and I did the appeal over the phone. I testified that I never lied on the application and felt that I was held liable for others who disregarded the fact that it was in black and white on the paper. The caseworker used as exhibits the applications I sent in and they all clearly state I was attending York Technical College, so I do not understand how it was not seen by reviewers for SNAP. The ruling was no matter who was at fault the monies was to be paid back by the party that received the benefits. I feel that this gives caseworkers a pass and does not produce an efficient verification process. All of this would have been avoided if there was a request denied stamped when I started school. They took almost half of my income taxes to pay them back for their mistake. This is not fair, because I have a child in college and needed those funds to help with her education. I do not make millions to throw away, every dollar counts in my life. I am very disappointed in the state and feel it was not the way to treat a citizen that was not trying to beat teh system. There are people out here selling SNAP like crazy and they never pay back but the one trying to do stuff right they make them pay back for their mistake. Its wrong and they know it.
