COLUMBIA, S.C.
(AP) - The State Law Enforcement Division is getting a large grant
to examine 500 unsolved cases.
U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., says $449,659 will come from
the federal Justice Department through its "No Suspect Casework DNA
Backlog Reduction Program."
SLED will use the money to pay for overtime and supplies for DNA
analysis in 500 no suspect cases. The DNA profiles that result will
go into the forensic index section of South Carolina's DNA database
where they can be compared to convicted offender indices.
"This funding arms South Carolina law enforcement with an
additional tool to solve crimes, especially in cases where no
suspect is known," Hollings said.
