(Columbia-AP) June 6, 2003 - The Department of Motor
Vehicles began opening some offices on Saturday. The new
office hours started just two days after Governor Mark
Sanford signed a bill to reform the agency.
Offices in Aiken, Charleston, Florence, Greenville,
Irmo and Rock Hill will be open all day on Saturdays
with a full staff of employees until August 23rd.
Department officials reported a steady stream of
customers. Most were pleased with the new
convenience.
Governor Mark Sanford signed a bill to make the
Division of Motor Vehicles a stand-alone agency that
answers to his office.
Under the new law, drivers' license expiration dates
would be extended from five to 10 years for most people.
Drivers also could get tag renewal stickers and
registrations from county treasurers' offices or private
entities.
Sanford also named Marcia Adams, of Irmo, to serve as
acting director of the DMV. It's one of many changes
ahead for the DMV.
