Thurmond's Estate Estimated at $200,000
(Aiken-AP) -- A Columbia newspaper reports today Strom Thurmond left an estate initially estimated at $200,000.

The State newspaper says Thurmond gave most of the estate to family members, former aides and favorite institutions.

Columbia attorney and certified public accountant Jim Jones is handling the estate. Jones says the value of the assets might increase after an inventory.

The newspaper reports the nine-page will was filed at the Aiken County courthouse on Monday.

Thurmond left his largest cash bequest of $50,000 to his daughter, Julie Thurmond Whitmer, of Washington, D.C.

The will gives Thurmond's Social Security and his retirement benefits from the U.S. Senate, U.S. Army and state of South Carolina to his estranged widow, Nancy Moore Thurmond. He died in June at age 100.
