SRS worker burned

Associated Press

A Savannah River Site worker suffered minor burns while cleaning a container used to make powders, site officials say.

Two workers were cleaning with isopropyl alcohol Tuesday morning at the former nuclear weapons plant when a small flash fire broke out, Washington Savannah River Co. spokeswoman Angie French said.

The fire went out before firefighters could arrive, French said.

No radioactive materials were involved, French said.

The injured worker is Andy Cheek, who said he suffered burns to the right side of his face, head and neck and will need a skin graft.

Cheek, who is an Augusta, Ga., Commissioner, expects to be released from the hospital by Thursday so he can attend a commissioner's retreat.
