Charley has little impact in Midlands

By mostly skirting the coast Saturday, Hurricane Charley spared the Midlands from any major weather problems.

“We didn’t receive significant rain or significant wind this far inland,” said Dan Miller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia.

For example, Columbia Metropolitan Airport recorded less than half an inch of hurricane-related rain, Miller said.

Hurricane Charley also had only minimal effect on flights at the airport.

Only two daily flights to Orlando, Fla., were canceled, said Lynne Douglas, marketing director for the airport. Douglas said she expected those flights would be running today.
