More than 3,000 people came to downtown Greenville on Monday to protest proposed changes in immigration.  It's an issue that cities faced across the country.

While many who came out are not citizens of our country, they know their rights here in America and said it's time for them to speak out.

Many of the speeches were in Spanish, but the signs made the messages clear to everyone.  Supporters at the rally were young, old, immigrants and American citizens.  They say immigrants are not criminals and they too have an American dream.

They wave flags proudly saying in fact it flies only because of the dreams of immigrants.

"I believe our country was founded by immigrants. I mean really, unless you're a native American your ancestors are immigrants," said Eric Bergerund.

Almost everyone wore white, they tell me that was a sign of peace. Some tell me that's why they love America, the right to peaceful protest.

Other protests took place all over the country.  Several hundred people turned out at events in Charleston and Columbia.

Diana Salazar is march coordinator for the South Carolina Latinos Coalition.  She says it's time for immigrants to get rights they are due.

Those opposed to amnesty for illegal immigrants say those here illegally are depressing wages and driving up health costs.
