SPARTANBURG - Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, perhaps with an eye on a run at the White House, will speak in Spartanburg tonight. Romney will appear at the Spartanburg County GOP President's Day event at the Summit Point Conference Center.

Romney has not officially declared his intentions to run for president, but he's considered among the likely contenders. Many are already focusing on South Carolina, which is expected to have the first Republican primary in 2008. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani recently appeared in Columbia. Arizona Senator John McCain and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist are also considered likely candidates.

Romney has increased his presence on the national stage since last year. He had a prime time speaking spot during the 2004 Republican National Convention and has announced some alterations to his stance on some issues recently.

Romney recently said in The New York Times that he opposes human embryonic stem-cell research that involves therapeutic cloning. Governor Romney has also led the fight in his state after the Massachusetts Judicial Court ruled same-sex marriages were constitutionally guaranteed.

Several national reporters are planning to follow Governor Romney to South Carolina and CSPAN will televise the speech live at 8:00pm as part of their Road To The White House coverage.

A recent CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll showed Giuliani and McCain leading Republican candidates. Democrats polled favor Senator Hillary Clinton as that party's 2008 nominee.
