Primary results Tuesday included:
Patterson wins
• Sen. Kay Patterson
breezed to victory Tuesday over attorney Hemphill Pride
in the District 19 Democratic primary.
It was Patterson’s first primary battle since his first Senate
victory nearly 20 years ago.
Patterson, 73, thanked the voters and said this likely will be
his last term in public office.
“I don’t plan on going on as long as my old friend Strom Thurmond
did,” Patterson said.
Jackson wins
• Incumbent Sen. Darrell
Jackson was a decisive winner over challenger Edward D.
Sullivan in the Democratic Party primary for Senate District 21.
Jackson will be unopposed in the fall election.
Neal wins
• Rep. Joe Neal, the
incumbent, defeated challenger Levola S. Taylor for the
Democratic primary for House District 70. Neal will be unopposed in
the fall election.
Dickerson wins
• Joyce Dickerson handed
opponent Wayne Gilbert a defeat in the Richland County
Council District 2 Democratic primary; the winner will face
Republican Jim Chappell in the fall
Bernice Scott wins
• Incumbent Bernice Scott
was the winner over challenger Helen Taylor in the
Democratic primary for Richland County Council District 10; Scott
faces no opposition in the fall.
Scott a winner
• Incumbent Barbara Scott
was a decisive winner over challenger Gloria Butler
Montgomery in the Democratic primary for Richland County clerk
of court. Scott faces no opposition in the fall.
In the fall:
• Richland County legislative
races where incumbents will face challengers in the fall are: Sen.
John Courson, R, will face Kit Smith, a Democratic
county councilwoman, in Senate 20, which also includes parts of
Lexington county; Rep. Leon Howard, D, will be opposed by
Ronnie Firetag, R, in District 76; Rep. John L. Scott,
D, will face Swain Whitfield, R, in District 77; and Rep.
Bill Cotty, R-Richland, will face Todd L. Wood, D, in
District 79, which includes parts of Richland and Kershaw
counties.
Unopposed
• The following legislators were
not opposed Tuesday and are not opposed in the fall: James
Smith, D, House 72; Joe E. Brown, D, House 73; J. Todd
Rutherford, D, House 74; Jim Harrison, R, House 75; and
Jimmy C. Bales, D, in House 80.
