Our state is known for its compassion, hospitality, and civility - we take care of our neighbors, welcome all guests, and demonstrate respect even if we don't understand or agree. These are values that are central to ethics in government and the very fiber of our democracy. I have been proud to have you as a Governor through all the trials of this past year: your leadership after the AME Massacre and in taking down the Confederate flag from the Statehouse, your incredible leadership during our "historic" flood, your proposals to advance high quality early care and education ( a critical strategy for sustainable economic development) in the Executive Budget, your graceful response to the State of the Union and subsequent refusal to engage with Mr. Trump ( bless his heart!) and now this refusal to jump on a very sad bandwagon of those who would increase discrimination, decrease protections and take us backward in civil rights. It takes grit, grace and a strong mind to lead with purpose driven vision and not follow the crowd. Thank you for reminding us it can still be done. Best wishes for the remainder of your term here (there is still much to be done!) and your continued ascendency on the national stage.
