Radio Club Secretary Charleston Amateur Radio Society 5513 Boots Ave North Charleston SC 29406 w5513@hotmail.com 843.744.6938 SCHED Inviting you to attend this years Field Day 216.186.156.5 The Honorable Governor for the State of South Carolina - Nikki Haley, I am the current secretary for the Charleston Amateur Radio Society (C.A.R.S.) Ham Radio Club and I would like to send you an invitation to join local Ham Radio operators, at this year's Amateur Radio Field Day Exercise on the USS Yorktown. Every year Amateur Radio operators get together and operate their radios under emergency conditions. We set up our stations on Friday (June 24th) in the afternoon. We will start the Field Day Exercise on Saturday (June 25th) around 1:00 PM and operate the radios around the clock until about 1:00 PM Sunday (June 26th). The object of the exercise is to try to contact as many other Radio Operators as we can, during that 24 hour period. Even though this is just an exercise, we want to show how Hams extend the eyes and ears of the community, and are a key part of the community's emergency response capability. During an emergency, normal communication methods can fail. From what I remember about the Boston bombing, cell towers overloaded and shutdown. During the aftermath of the "Sandy" storm, cell towers and regular land line telephones failed. In both cases, Ham Radio Operators were still able to communicate and proved their value to the community. Local area Ham Radio Operators support a lot of the Charleston Area runs and races (i.e. Cooper River Bridge Run, Charleston Marathon, the Day after the bridge Bike Run and several others races or runs during the year). Even most of the areas EOC's have Ham Radio for backup communications. Hopefully we will never be called on for an emergency, but by conducting exercises like Field Day, we stand ready to help out if needed. If you are available to attend, would you be able to give an estimate of what time you might arrive? We can have someone meet you at the gangplank of the Yorktown and escort you to the radio room. We usually have one radio using Morse Code (CW), two radio's using voice and we've even added a third radio that uses a digital signal. There should be people available to answer any questions you may have, about Amateur Radio, and perhaps even encourage you to get your own license. In case you need a contact, here are a few telephone numbers, for Operators that might be on the Yorktown.
