E3 Hilton Head Island SC 29928 ctfergu@g.clemson.edu ENVI Stand Up For Standing Rock and Stop the DAPL 216.16.215.143 Dear Governor Haley, My name is Corey Ferguson and I am a residence of Hilton Head Island, SC. I was born in the Carolinas and recently graduated from Clemson University. I love the area that we live in, bordered on each end by mountains and coastline. I have great respect for the environment as I'm sure you do too. I have been floored by the developments regarding the Dakota Access Pipeline and the treatment of the water protectors in Standing Rock, North Dakota. The environmental and social injustices embedded within the project and the brutality towards the peaceful protesters is disgraceful. This pipeline is discriminatory against the Native Americans of this country and poisonous for the environment and the Missouri River. The dependence this country has and continues to have on fossil fuels is only further promoted and supported through the development of these pipelines. From an environmental standpoint, we need to drastically change our energy consumption and make the immediate transition to renewable resources. From a social standpoint, we need to honor the great people that settled here first and the diversity that makes this country great! We need to stand with the people of Standing Rock and make our voices heard that this treatment of the people and land of America is unacceptable and must be stopped. I have used multiple outlets to voice my concern and I am reaching out to you today, the Governor of my home state, to use your authority and platform to speak out for those who go unheard. Speak about the brutality and unethical means that the Energy Transfer Partners and every other supporter of this pipeline have used to progress this monstrosity. Speak about the Native Americans that are being bullied and abused by these corporations and United States Government so that Native Americans in North Dakota and throughout the country can be heard. Speak about the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and discuss immediate methods for alternative energy. Use your authority to address the United States Government, the people of South Carolina, and the President and President-elect of this country and show your support, raise awareness, and push to end this environmentally and socially racist pipeline. The motives defined and pursued by greed need to end within this country. The time for unity and respect towards each other and the environment starts now. Please use your power to speak for people of North Dakota and people everywhere fighting for this cause! Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Corey Ferguson
